When To Start Searching for Ann Arbor Apartments and Houses Near UMich

If you’ve never lived off-campus before, you may not know when to start your search for UMich off-campus housing. Well, not to rush you - but the earlier the better. The Ann Arbor apartment and housing hunt can get pretty competitive pretty fast. If you start your searching for houses and apartments for rent in Ann Arbor earlier in the fall semester, you’ll have better luck finding a place since the competition will be a little less fierce and there will be more options.

Regardless of what you’re searching for, we’d recommend you start your search mid to late September as a majority of students reach out to landlords in October. Everyone knows college is expensive, and one of the bigger expenses to students (after tuition of course) is your living expenses. Traditionally, living off-campus is less expensive than the dorms. But that doesn’t mean that by living in UMich off-campus housing you’re going to be saving more money than if you had switched your car insurance to Geico. But you’ll definitely have more money for your beer grocery fund.

If you want to save as much money as possible, we’d recommend you live in a house or apartment in Ann Arbor with a couple of roommates. The more people there are to split the cost of utilities, groceries, and rent, the cheaper it’ll be for you. If you’ve done the whole roommate thing before and have decided you need a little more privacy or are tired of having people steal your ramen, you can definitely choose to live on your own - but that privacy is going to cost you a few hundred dollars every month than if you had a roommate.
