Michigan State Off-Campus Housing Guide

MSU Apartments and Houses

Remember living in the dorms at Michigan State? They were too small, and your roommate was either super weird or is now your best friend. There is no in-between.

Living off-campus in MSU apartments and houses is similar, but you’ll finally have some space to yourself. When you’re searching for East Lansing apartments and houses, keep in mind that you’ll have a wide variety to choose from. But having too many options can make it hard to choose a place. It’s like trying to choose where you want to eat when you’re already super hungry. In order to make sure you can hone in on that perfect place, try figuring out ahead of time what you’re looking for in your next rental. Do you want to live alone or with roommates? What’s your budget? Are you looking for houses or apartments near MSU

Not that we’re trying to persuade you, but after thousands of conversations with students, hours of analysis of trends and data, and more importantly, our own personal experiences, here are the biggest reasons students typically prefer apartments to houses for rent East Lansing, MI:

  • There are almost always more utilities are included with the rent.
  • There’s often a building manager or maintenance technician on call to help out with any problems. No more waiting for your landlord that owns 30 other houses.
  • Sometimes, you're going to have to deal with snow when you go to Michigan State. You'll still have to walk through it on campus, but, as an apartment renter, you never have to worry about shoveling or salting a driveway or walkway. Thank goodness!
  • There are some pretty sweet amenities out there. Many places near campuses now include things like coffee bars, workout rooms, pools, shuttles to campus (if they’re further out), tanning beds and more.

When To Start Searching For MSU Housing

The hunt for MSU off-campus housing can get pretty competitive. Like more competitive than the girls and guys on the bachelor/bachelorette competing for 15 minutes of fame true love. The competition kicks off as soon as students get to campus, as that’s when you’ll see a spike in searches for East Lansing apartments near MSU. A majority of students will have called and toured their first apartment within the first two months of the Fall semester.

Even if you're set on living in an apartment by yourself - typically something you can wait till a few months before you move in on - you might have trouble finding anything near campus by the time the second semester rolls around.  Find your MSU apartment in early October and save the panic for exams.

Not super fond of going to class? Yeah, we weren’t either. Lucky for you, Michigan State is the place to be for activities. Michigan has proven to be the place for beautiful nature, and that is no different in the areas surrounding MSU Campus! We recommend checking out Beal Botanical Gardens as soon as you can. It is the oldest operating garden of its kind in the United States, featuring five acres of many rare and endangered plants.

Another famous thing brought to us by Michigan is...cheese! The MSU Dairy Plant makes some of the freshest dairy products around. They make their cheese, yogurt, and ice cream easily available to students! All you have to do is head into the MSU Dairy store to get all the goods.

The State Room Restaurant is just a short distance from campus and famous for their fancy wine selection. With a world-renowned staff of chefs, their food is unlike anything else in the MSU area. This restaurant is perfect for a classy night with your significant other.
