University Hill in Syracuse: A Hill of a Good Time (We’re Not Sorry)

Perhaps you’re a first-time renter or maybe this isn’t your first rodeo living off-campus in Syracuse. Regardless, students can agree that choosing where you’re going to live plays a huge part in the whole college experience – so finding housing in University Hill is not a bad idea. With so many options, you’re going to want to find that perfect place you’ve always dreamt of.

In University Hill, you’ll find an area just minutes from campus, with some of the best dining options, parks, entertainment in Syracuse. That’s what makes the University Hill neighborhood a top choice for thousands of Syracuse students each year.

University Hill Makeup

Commonly referred to as “The Hill,” it’s located east and southeast of Downtown Syracuse. As its name suggests, the University Hill neighborhood sits perched upon one of Syracuse’s largest hills and shares it’s zipcode with Syracuse University. Thanks to its great proximity to campus, more than 80% (nearly 10,000 students) of the total neighborhood population is comprised of students. 

University Hill Housing and Transportation

While there are apartments, University Hill has a lot more houses for rent many of which are older homes that have been restored ranging in many sizes and offer a variety of amenities. Unless you have a designated spot, parking in University Hill is limited, so walking or biking is preferred, easy, and fast option, taking anywhere from five to twenty minutes to get to most everything on the Syracuse campus. No bike, no problem, grab one of the new Gotcha bikes around town and cruise to wherever you need to go. University Hill is also filled with Centro Bus stops, and the app makes it easy to plan out your ride and watch for your bus in real-time. Basically, if you need to get somewhere, especially to campus, you have plenty of options and you can’t get much closer than The Hill.  

What to Do in University Hill

University Hill has two business districts, East Genesee Street and Marshall Street. While Marshall Street is bigger of the two, both streets are filled will shops, hotels, bars, and restaurants. Some favored restaurants you’ll want to make a point to check out are Varsity Pizza, Bleu Monkey Cafe and Dolce Vida. For drinks and a night out with friends try Dark Horse, Good Buddies or Wolff’s Biergarten and we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. The Syracuse Stage (the Syracuse performance center) is also located on East Genesee, making it convenient to go see a dance, theater, concert, or comedy act throughout the year. For those who enjoy the outdoors, University Hill borders Thorndon Park which has a beautiful rose garden, swimming pool, several walking trails, and sports courts. 

For the Syracuse student that wants to be in on all of the action, close to campus, and surrounded by a vast majority of your fellow peers, then choosing an off-campus rental in University Hill sounds like the perfect choice for you! Getting to classes, running your daily errands, grabbing a bite to eat, meeting friends at the park or bar can all easily be made possible in a matter of minutes living in University Hill.
