UW-Stout students with hopes of finding the best UW-Stout off-campus housing will want to begin their hunt at the beginning of the school year. Students who start looking for UW-Stout apartments and houses near campus in August or September, right after moving in, are going to get the best spots. It seems crazy, but with the limited number of available houses for rent in Menomonie and intense competition to find a place to live in with friends, the number of housing searches peaks in September and October.

After winter break, housing searches dies down as the spring semester begins and students begin to sign more and more leases around the area. If you're looking for a one bedroom or studio apartment, you should be in good shape at any point during the second semester. But we always encourage renters to get started sooner rather than later.

Outdoor/Recreation

Menomonie is a small city, located in western Wisconsin, surrounded by hundreds of miles of wilderness so you can bet there’s always outdoor adventures to go on! Bike, walk or run the Red Cedar State Trail. Head to the Hoffman Hills State Recreation Center and hike the hills to catch breathtaking views of the Chippewa Valley. Hoffman Hills is also a great place to ski and snowshoe during the Wisconsin winters. If you’re into fishing, or want to try it out, the Bullfrog Fish Farm will  provide you with all the equipment you need to fish at their lake. If you catch anything they’ll cook it up fresh for you!

Things To Do In Menomonie, WI

Some of the best events happen right at the start of the school year! Students are welcomed back to school with the Backyard Bash which is filled with activities, numerous booths, and the perfect place to meet new friends! Here, students can also learn about all the great clubs and organizations to get involved in. Students can catch a movie on the lawn outside campus and join in on fun games like bingo to win prizes! Supporting the Blue Devil’s sports teams is also wildly popular and a fun way to rep Stout.

Since Stout is located in the small town of Menomonie many of the fun activities take place outdoors. Lake Menomin is right by campus and it’s a good spot for kayaking. There are several hiking trails and the Devil’s Punchbowl is a great place to soak in the Wisconsin scenery year round.
